Sober Firsts

💡 Insight

Early recovery is a long series of firsts. The first sober weekend. The first birthday, wedding, holiday, work party, vacation, funeral, and the first truly terrible day where the old way out isn't available. Many of these loom enormous in advance. People describe dreading them for weeks.

What's striking is how often the anticipation turns out to be harder than the event itself. The mind is good at rehearsing disaster and bad at predicting what actually happens. You picture every awkward question, every tray of drinks, every moment of feeling like the only one not having fun. Then you go, and it's mostly fine. Awkward in places, maybe. Boring in others. But survivable — and often more meaningful than you expected, because you're actually there for it.

Each first you get through becomes a reference point. The second sober holiday isn't a leap into the unknown; it's a repeat of something you've already done. Firsts are the hardest because they have no precedent. You're building the precedent.

✦ Quote

"There are more things, Lucilius, likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality."

— Seneca, Letters to Lucilius, Letter 13 (trans. Richard M. Gummere)

◎ Prompt

Name the next sober first on your calendar. Write down the worst-case version you've been imagining — then the most likely version. Then write one thing you'll do to make it easier: arrive late, leave early, bring your own drink, bring an ally.
