Hi, I'm Dan.
I've been in recovery. I know what it's like to want a different life and not quite know how to build one. I also know what it's like to find that the frameworks available — the steps, the meetings, the scripts — don't quite fit the way your mind works.
So I started reading. A lot. Neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, memoir. I started finding the ideas that actually moved something in me. And I realized that most of those ideas weren't labeled "recovery content" at all — they were just true things about being human, applied to the particular hard work of getting sober and staying that way.
Sovereign Recovery is my attempt to collect and share the best of those ideas — one day at a time.
What Sovereign Recovery is
Sovereign Recovery is a daily email newsletter — The Daily Sovereign — and a growing archive of ideas, quotes, prompts, and resources for people in secular recovery.
Every day, a short email goes out. It contains one insight, one quote, and one prompt. It takes about three minutes to read. The goal is that you start your day feeling a little more grounded, a little more clear about why you're doing this, and a little more equipped to do it well.
New subscribers also receive 30 Days of Sovereign — a complete 30-day sequence that builds a foundation for grounded, secular recovery. It's the kind of thing I wish I'd had access to early on.
What this isn't
This is not a 12-step program. It doesn't require belief in a higher power, surrender of the self, or lifelong identification as an addict. It doesn't prescribe a path.
It takes seriously the science of addiction — what it does to the brain, what recovery actually involves neurologically and psychologically. It draws from stoicism, Buddhism, existential psychology, cognitive behavioral research, and the hard-won wisdom of people who've been through it.
It treats you as an intelligent adult who is doing something genuinely difficult, and who deserves tools that work — not slogans.
The philosophy behind the name
Sovereign means self-governing. In command of yourself. Not controlled by something outside you — not a substance, not a compulsion, not someone else's script for your recovery.
The word isn't a destination. It's a direction. Most of us in recovery aren't fully sovereign every day — we're working toward it, one choice at a time. But the direction matters. The frame matters. You're not powerless. You're in the process of reclaiming yourself.
That's what this is about.
