Play the Tape Forward

💡 Insight

Yesterday was about the way memory edits the past. Today is about doing the same editing work on the future. A craving is a salesman, and like any salesman it shows you only the best part of the product: the first sip, the first hit, the first wave of relief. It never shows you the rest of the evening.

Playing the tape forward is a technique used in cognitive-behavioral approaches to relapse prevention. When the urge arrives, you deliberately follow the movie past the opening scene. The first drink — then what? The second, the fourth, the text you send at midnight, the lie you tell in the morning, the conversation you'll have to have with the person who trusted you. Then keep going: next week, next month.

It works because it moves you from the part of the brain that's reacting to the part that's planning. The craving is loud about the next ten minutes and silent about everything after. You're not trying to scare yourself. You're just refusing to make a decision based on the trailer.

✦ Quote

"Our deeds determine us, as much as we determine our deeds."

— George Eliot, Adam Bede (1859)

◎ Prompt

Write out the full tape for your most likely relapse scenario — the first moment through the following week, in detail. Keep it short enough to read in a minute. That's what you'll reach for when the salesman shows up.
